Marcia Gay Harden, born 14 August 1959 in San Diego, California, was the daughter of Beverly the homemaker, and Thad, a US Navy officer. She is the mother to a brother, and three sisters. Family members often relocated because of her father's position as diplomat, which meant they were living all over the world in countries like Germany, Japan, and Greece. When they settled in Maryland, Harden went to Surrattsville High School in Clinton. In 1980, the student attended the University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a bachelor's degree in theater. Harden was admitted to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in 1988 to receive her MFA.
